Grammys 2024: Taylor Swift makes history with best album award

Taylor Swift stole the show at this year's Grammy Awards, becoming the first artist to win album of the year four times. The superstar was previously tied for three best album wins with Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, and Frank Sinatra.

She received the award from Celine Dion, who made an unexpected appearance amid health concerns. Swift also used the event to announce a surprise new album. Miley Cyrus and Billie Eilish won the other major awards at Sunday's ceremony. Women dominated the Los Angeles show, with R&B stars SZA and Victoria Monét, all-female indie supergroup Boygenius winning multiple awards, and music icons Tracy Chapman and Joni Mitchell giving rare and poignant performances.

Killer Mike was the top male winner, collecting three rap trophies. However, his success was overshadowed by an alleged altercation backstage, which resulted in him being "booked for misdemeanor battery," according to LA police.

Taylor Swift achieved the Grammy Award for Album of the Year with her album Midnights.

Miley Cyrus' "Flowers" is the record of the year.

What Was I Made For, by Billie Eilish, is the song of the year.

Victoria Monét was named Best New Artist. The distinction between Song of the Year and Record of the Year is that the former honors songwriters and compositions, while the latter focuses on the technical aspects of recording, including production, engineering, and performance.

 Taylor and Celine  celebrated

Dion received a rousing reception when she appeared to present the best album award, nearly a year after being forced to cancel all of her live shows due to a rare neurological disorder.

"When I say that I'm happy to be here, I really mean it from my heart," she told the audience.

When Dion announced Swift's name as the winner of best album, the audience reacted enthusiastically.

The historic achievement is one of many that the star has accomplished in recent years. She said she "would love to tell you that this is the best moment in my life", but that simply finishing a song, rehearsing, or preparing to play a show makes her equally happy.

"For me, the award is the work," she stated. "I just want to keep being able to do this. I absolutely adore it. It makes me very happy. It amazes me that some of the people who voted for this award are also happy."

Swift has previously won album of the year for Fearless (2010), 1989 (2016), and Folklore (2021).

Big night for Billie and Barbie.

Midnights won best pop vocal album on Sunday, but Swift has yet to receive song or record of the year awards. What Was I Made For?, Eilish's contribution to the Barbie film soundtrack, beat out Swift's Anti-Hero for song of the year this time. SZA, Cyrus, and Olivia Rodrigo's tracks were also in contention. Accepting the award alongside her brother and co-writer Finneas, Eilish told the audience: "Everyone in this category - that was a crazy list of incredible people, incredible artists, and incredible music. Right now, I'm feeling crazy." The song was also named best song written for visual media, and the Barbie album, produced by Mark Ronson, received the award for best visual media compilation soundtrack.

Flowers by Cyrus won the record of the year award, as well as the best pop vocal performance.

They were the star's first Grammys, which she acknowledged during her performance by changing one of the song's lyrics to: "I just won my first Grammy!"

And in her first acceptance speech, she told the story of a boy whose futile attempts to catch a butterfly ended when he stopped swinging around a net and remained motionless.

"And right when he did is when the butterfly came and landed right on the tip of his nose. "And this song, Flowers, is my butterfly," Cyrus explained.
